What is Tantra?

A Couple Embracing on the Beach

Today tantra is beckoning more and more of us to conscious living—and who among us can resist opening the door to spiritual secrets through sexual union? In this sense, tantra cannot be talked about—it can only be understood through direct experience. Yet, for the sake of introductions…

Within the dream of history, the origins of tantra can be traced to ancient scriptures that teach us how to utilize our sexual energy, which is therein revered as the sacred life force driving all creation. Literally translated from Sanskrit, tantra means “to weave,” “to manifest,” and “to liberate.” Thus, in tantra, you are awakening your sexual energy and channeling it toward your highest creative expression, whatever you imagine that to be—and indeed, it can be anything you desire!

Now, because tantric wisdom is conveyed via specific techniques, tantra is considered a science—of which your data is collected through life experience. Through skillful application of tantric techniques, an exhilarating transformation dawns on those willing to undergo radical shifts the mind can't possibly understand.

Thanks to mass media and especially the Internet, awareness of tantra has been growing by leaps and bounds in the West, though few realize that sex is only a part of tantra, so it is necessary to challenge the media's limited interpretation. For instance, one might ask:

Why has the sexual aspect of tantra, especially prolonging orgasm, become the media's primary focus?

The answer: Orgasm is perhaps the most common means by which all human beings can go beyond mind to enter the ecstatic realm of no-mind, which is actually our True Nature. Orgasm, as such, is the pinnacle of Reality wherein dualities collide and dissolve into the infinite ocean of our divinity. This state is what everyone wants to actualize, whether they are conscious of it or not.

For those who do not meditate and are caught in the “daily grind,” sexual orgasm is possibly the only way out of one’s head and into the heart—even if only for moments at a time. So it is truly a blessed occurrence when people are drawn to tantra via the promise of extended orgasm, since it increases the probability that people will discover what tantra is really all about.

Tantric orgasm is actually quite different from the foreplay-entry-climax sequence “practiced” by most Westerners. This methodical, friction-based tension/release cycle paradoxically desensitizes the genitals and leaves us CRAVING more, better and different varieties of sexual stimulation.

Instead, tantra offers an ideal antidote to this by directing the orgasmic energy through the entire body to cultivate a deep, sustained orgasm that can be felt in one’s genitals, heart and even beyond the body.

It could be said that if tantra did have a goal, it is the progressive sustenance of orgasm—or “mindless” state, whereby one’s consciousness is projected beyond the physical realm, where the sense of “I” merges with All Existence. Yet this description is a mere pointer, for to be truly meaningful, the above signposts must be explored firsthand.

Through its timeless precepts, tantra offers an extensive repertoire of scientifically designed seated and active meditations for heightening sensitivity, relaxing the body and promoting the free flow of energy throughout and beyond the body. Such energy flows purify the body and mind, relieving it of socially conditioned shame and guilt that otherwise restrict one’s vitality and joy. Through proper breath, body movement, meditation, conscious communication and creative imagination, sexual energy can be directed toward opening the heart and experiencing the perfect life you have always sought. If it is your intention to awaken your desires toward the realization of your life’s ultimate purpose and fulfillment of your destiny—you're in the right place, because that is the promise of tantra.
